U.S. opposition to breastfeeding

The United States diplomatic opposition to breastfeeding caused issues at the World Health Assembly in Geneva.  A resolution to encourage breastfeeding was not effortlessly passed because of pushback from the U.S.  In order to keep infant formula manufacturers happy, the U.S. tried to change the resolution to prohibit governments across the world from promoting breastfeeding and restricting alternative food products. The U.S. threatened smaller countries that might back the resolution. Ultimately, the threats were unsuccessful since Russia stepped in to back the resolution and did not get any pushback from the U.S. nytimes
