mother-in-law changes child's name

A distraught new mother recently wrote into Slate.com for advice after her mother-in-law crafted a plan to change her grandson's name behind her back. While the young mom was recovering from an emergency c-section, her husband was contacted by his mother with a plot to change the newborn's middle name from Finley to Finlay, a spelling which she deemed more "masculine." After sneakily succeeding, the child's name was legally changed and it was not until months later when she was filing away baby Fin's birth certificate that she discovered the deceit. The advice column's response was one of angry shock and encouraged the mother to acknowledge the truth of her feelings and get to the bottom of the conflict with her husband first.
