when kids hit

A mother writes into the washington post to ask what to do when her first-grader still hits others in frustration or just to lash out.  The response given was a comprehensive list on why young ones may still hit:
  • immaturity - they are too young for their prefrontal cortex to make a proper decision
  • frustration - they are frustrated about a situation and do not understand how to respond
  • sleep - poor sleep may regulate our emotions and our ability to react
  • nutrition - poor nutrition may impose a threat on well-being and a child's ability to respond appropriately to disappointment
  • anxiety - when the brain tries to protect itself from a source of worry it cannot understand, low-level panic might lead to outbursts
  • blood sugar + allergies - well-being body imbalances can greatly affect a child's behavior
  • neurological issues - have your pediatrician check for ADD or ADHD disorders
